Hi Cool Storytellers,

This month, I'm preparing for a two-day event, the Washington County Artists Alliance Open Studios Tour. Preparation requires more than just showing up with my artwork and I am sharing some of my process and tips in today's newsletter.

Here's how I get everything ready:

1. Attending Local Vending Events: This is my first time participating in the Open Studios Tour 2024. I attend other vending events to learn and ask questions on how I can do things better. Also, I really pay attention to how many vendors use affordable and cheap methods and curate the experience of their booths to make a fun and immersive experience.

Tip: If you're nervous or shy, you can ask a vendor questions like "I'm curious about what frame you use." , "Where can I purchase your brand risers?", "Do you have recommendations for signs and banners?"

2. Gathering the Best Quality Supplies: I invest in quality canvas panels and collage materials to make sure my work is the best it can be. (Hint: I’m obsessed with vibrant colors and unique textures!)

Tip: I like to purchase online, but local thrift stores, art supply stores and craft stores sell great materials. The Hillsboro Public Library has a list of resources for craft and art supplies.

3. Curating the Space: The Hive is the studio space I will be welcoming visitors. I love the natural light, the open space, and the many books that are in the space. I think it ties well with the fact that I will be explaining the inspiration behind my work and what influenced it. I will be using some silk flowers, cowrie shells, and other bright and colorful adornments. The goal? Make them feel like they're stepping into a living gallery.

Tip: I like to look up Pinterest boards to get a feel for what is possible.

4. Demos for a Real-Time Experience: I’ll be showcasing my paper storytelling techniques live! Whether it’s blending colors or layering textures, attendees get to see the magic happen right before their eyes. It’s all about sharing my passion and connecting with fellow art lovers.

Tip: You can bring a portfolio with other samples of your work.

5. Payment Options: I will use Stripe, Paypal, Venmo, CashApp, and have cash on hand.

Tip: Always have multiple payment options on hand. It's not a waste of time and people appreciate having options.

6. Collectable Art Prints: I will be packaging my art prints perfect for gifting or framing for the holidays or birthdays.

7.Unique Marketing Ideas from Friends: Alyssa Vandergrief suggests creating comics about the characters to hand out. Tahni Marie (QueenofGoldfish) shares creating brochures and flyers and getting them printed out so visitors can learn more about my story, culture and history.

Tip: Get 3 quotes and make the best choice that fits your budget! The library is great to print for free. You can print at home if you have access to a printer. You can also get flyers and brochures printed at 9 Cent Color Copies or your local office supply store.

8. Budget: It's important to have a budget, however small. It will keep you on track but also allow you to cut costs on nonessentials.

P.S. (I'm #14! It's happening on October 19-20, 10am - 5pm. Check out the map here!)🎨✨

Salaam,
