LONG BIO
Nadia Shaik is an American-born, Multiracial Muslim, Award-winning author, writer, artist, researcher, community arts and writing educator, and business development manager. She draws inspiration from diverse roots.
At age five, she followed her lifelong joy for storytelling with 'The People Could Fly: American Black Folktales' at the Chicago Lawn Branch public library. This book sparked her imagination, connecting her with African diaspora folktales and the resilience of the human spirit, setting her on a creative journey. Later, in college, Joseph Campbell's 'The Power of Myth' connected the dots for her, deepening her passion for storytelling.
The eldest daughter of a Muslim Indian immigrant father and a Convert Muslim Black American mother, her unique and challenging upbringing within a diverse, blended family and community is a lasting and profound representation of Modern America's rich tapestry, infusing her work with an accessible spirit. An aspiring full-time writer, Nadia is committed to crafting stories and characters that delve deeper than skin-deep storytelling. Her work aims to connect and resonate profoundly with her audience, reminding them that they are more than their circumstances or what others think of them.
Nadia's creative journey has led her to contribute her talents as a writer and character designer for a comic collaboration with Dark Horse Comics and PGE. This year, she delivered a comics lecture to nursing students at her alma mater, Portland Community College, where she completed Film Studies and New Media Communications coursework. She is a proud graduate of Larissa Martanza's OC Arts Studios and Mira Reisberg's Children's Book Academy.
Her exceptional storytelling abilities were recognized when she was chosen from over 3,000 applicants across America to participate in TV-Pilot America’s Next Great Author, created by the Book Doctors, reaching the semifinals alongside 100 other talented writers in a fiercely competitive arena.
Nadia's interests extend beyond her creative pursuits. She cherishes moments with her Grandma Nell, explores Oregon's natural beauty, loves designing unique outfits, and is passionate about experiencing diverse cuisines and performing arts through culinary and art adventures. Additionally, she's an avid volunteer and patron of arts education, cultural and performing arts.
